Talk to fill

Inside a section, you can just talk. Describe what you see and the app puts your words into the right fields — one sentence can fill several. Here's how it works.

1

Tap, talk, tap

  1. Open a section. Tap the mic at the bottom — once. You don't need to hold it.

  2. Talk about what you see. “Asphalt shingles, maybe ten years old, some granule loss on the south slope, gutters full of debris.”

  3. Watch the chips: they tick as they're heard. A light tick means the app thinks it heard the answer.

  4. Tap the mic again to stop.

Leaving the section — opening the camera, going back — stops the recording and saves what you said.

2

When you stop

The app says Putting your words where they belong… while a careful final pass runs on our server, then Fields updated ✓. The final pass is what fills the fields for good.

  • No signal? You'll see Voice note saved on this phone ✓ — fields fill in when you're back on signal. Your recording is safe; the fields fill in later.
  • Nothing matched? Your words are kept in the walk's transcript. Tap a chip to fill it by hand.
  • Couldn't make it out? Try again a little closer to the phone.
3

What you type always wins

If you've typed an answer into a field, talking never overwrites it. Voice fills what's empty.

To check or fix a voice answer, tap the chip. The sheet shows what was heard, so you can see where it came from. Change it and tap Save. When you correct a word the app got wrong, it adds the right one to your vocabulary, so it gets it right next time.

4

Five minutes at a time

One recording can run up to five minutes. The timer turns red near the end, and at 5:00 it stops and saves on its own. Need more? Tap the mic again.

5

Teach it your words

Go to Settings → My Vocabulary and add the brand names, technical terms and local place names you use — Zinsco, efflorescence, EIFS. The app also listens for the section's own field names. Words it learned from your corrections are tagged learned.

Saved paragraphs work by voice too: say a shortcut from your comment library and that paragraph is added to the section. See Comment library.

6

Microphone and speech permission

The app needs two permissions, which iOS asks for the first time you tap the mic: Microphone to record, and Speech Recognition to tick fields while you talk.

If Speech Recognition is off, you'll see Live transcription unavailable. Tap Record anyway and your voice note still records — the fields fill in after you stop. Or tap Open Settings and turn Speech Recognition on for ReportWalk.

7

On a Freestyle walk

There are no fields to fill, so voice works as a note on your photos: take photos, tap the mic on the camera, and describe them. The app uses what you said to write the report.
